Midwest Destination:
Historic Galena
NE Illinois - JoDaviess County

galena_church.jpg - 5754 Bytes    Built high in the hills in northeast Illinois, Galena is a historical reminder of a past worth preserving. The picturesque destination for tourists from around the world, Galena is a perfect example of what can be accomplished when we honor our past while working towards a future.

The streets are aligned with visions of our past while parked outside are not buggies and horses of yesteryear but vehicles of today. The historic homes are reminders of a difficult era in which our ancestors lived.

Pictured to the left is one of Galena's oldest churches
St Michael's Catholic Church at 227 South Bench St.

The architecture in Galena is remarkable. The fronts of houses are built on one street and the rear of the houses' basements falls level with the lower street. The fronts of the houses are within a few feet of the street itself; often with only a small porch and sidewalk separating them. Parking in town is often along the street. In the heat of summer, the absence of grass is evident in the increase of heat. We can thank technology for the advancement of air conditioning so we can visit Galena during those hot unbearable summers. Don't neglect Galena during the off seasons when the crowds die down; visiting can be more relaxed, creating an atmosphere possibly more reminiscent of times past.

We visit Galena at least 3 or 4 times a year. It's a fascinating place [and in my case where some of my ancestors once lived]. I think we could visit there for the next twenty years and still never see and experience everything there is in the small gem of a town - Galena - "The town that time forgot."

Have fun in your own backyard!
